Sheire, a student at the independent law school in St. Paul, is the Magister of the William Mitchell Inn, the school's chapter of the international law fraternity Phi Delta Phi. Phi Delta Phi is the oldest and largest legal fraternity in the country whose distinguishable members include the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist and Theodore Roosevelt. As the organization's Magister, Sheire is the "go-to person for the organization." She keeps in contact with the fraternity's national headquarters and the campus' Student Bar Association in order to coordinate programs and events. She is also the chair of all meetings held by the Inn, including general membership and board meetings.

"I got involved with the fraternity when I attended one of their programs my first year and ended up talking with one of their members who told me a little about the fraternity.  I filled out a membership form and went through initiation that semester and have been an active member ever since," she said.

The fraternity holds several events throughout the year. The biggest event is Ethics Week. While the event's content varies from year-to-year, it generally includes guest speakers; a luncheon with a professor; a fun event such as BINGO or a Jeopardy-like game; and, as of last year, a bake sale in which all of the products were named after the rules of professional responsibility.

Sheire credits her desire to become a lawyer to the criminal law class she took as a Criminology major during her undergraduate studies at Southern Oregon University. She says that she fell in love with criminal law and decided to become a prosecutor. She is currently working as a county law clerk with the Washington County Attorney's Office in Minnesota.

"I would have to say that this position found me," she said.  "I had just finished my spring 2006 semester, and I received a forwarded e-mail from our Career Services office from a county attorney clerk who was leaving and wanted to see if anyone was interested.  Because I had indicated online an interest in criminal work, they informed me of the opportunity, and I followed up with it.  The experience has been incredible.  I'm getting to appear in court on a daily basis, as well as doing research, writing appellate briefs, and drafting complaints."

She feels that student organizations present new opportunities for those who participate in them and encourages students to get involved.

"There are so many reasons to be involved in student associations," she said.  "With Phi Delta Phi, you become part of an international organization with ties everywhere.  It's a well-respected organization with an impressive history (it's nine years older than the ABA) and some of the most notable jurists throughout history have been members, including five of the nine Supreme Court justices when Chief Justice Rehnquist served.  Student organizations also provide a way to get to know people that you may not come in contact with otherwise—students that aren't in your year, professors you might not take classes with, individuals from other schools who are involved in other branches of the organization, and speakers who come to talk to your group.  The networking opportunities that come from being involved in a student organization are unlimited."

Q. What are your hobbies and interests?
A. Once the bar exam is over I plan on finding some. I seem to recall enjoying reading and video games when I was younger.
Q. What CD was most recently in your CD player?
A. Besides the PMBR Real Property Lecture, I think it's John Mayer, Continuum.
Q. What is the last magazine you read?
A. Newsweek, about six months ago.
Q. What is your favorite TV show?
A. Law & Order, SVU or Conviction.
Q. Who is your role model?
A. Jeanine Pirro, elected Westchester County District Attorney in 1993 and later the first woman jurist there, who has been a pioneer in combating domestic violence and internet predatory offenders.

According to Sheire, her favorite memory of law school is the Friday night tradition held by her group of friends. Every week, the group met at a local bar, Billy's, for their "Friday Fun Factory," where the group discussed off-the-wall legal topics such as "whether a long term affair with someone else's wife should be considered trespass to chattel, adverse possession, or something else."

Sheire recently graduated, completing law school in just two and a half years. She plans to pursue a career in a city or county attorney's office.

"I did my practicum experience with the Jackson County, Oregon, District Attorney's Office—interning for the assistant district attorney who handled domestic violence cases," she said.  "The more experience I got with the criminal prosecution area, the more I liked it and the more it cemented what I wanted to do."
