  • Where You Can Work
Bryan Cave LLP

by Joann Chang
Bryan Cave's humble roots began in 1873, not too far away from its current headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. Originally named King, Phillips & Stewart, the current name partners P. Taylor Bryan and Rhodes Cave joined in 1911 and 1917, respectively. The firm has many long-standing and loyal relationships with some of the largest companies in America, including Bank of America and The Boeing Company. The last thirty years has brought tremendous growth to the company and the firm currently stands strong with over 840 attorneys, 15 offices, and $250 million worth of revenue.

Bryan Cave has a strong international presence, with offices in England, China, and the Middle East. Established in 1982, the firm's London office has a noted litigation practice and recently ranked as having the 24th highest revenue among the international firms in the United Kingdom according to The Lawyer 100. The Shanghai and Hong Kong offices are well known for their tax and trust work, as well as their expertise in transactional law. Additionally, the firm's Middle Eastern presence received a lot of press in the early 1990s when Bryan Cave garnered the counsel positions for the Kuwaiti government in their $100 billion lawsuit against the State of Iraq.

Although the atmosphere of Bryan Cave's offices varies from office to office, the firm's attorneys are generally known to have a strong work ethic and cordial manners. The Midwestern roots of the firm seem to travel pretty well and, despite its conservative reputation, most associates positively describe the firm's polite and casual environment. Partners and associates enjoy friendly relationships at this firm, with most associates finding it easy to seek out partners for advice and training. The associates also benefit from some of the best views of the city from their respective offices. Lucky Los Angeles associates are close enough to hear the ocean and St. Louis attorneys have views of the St. Louis Arch.

If you are looking for a job straight out of law school here, your chances are greatly increased by scoring a summer associate position. Bryan Cave hires many of its first-years from its summer intern pool and invests a lot of effort into its summer programs. It all seems to be paying off for the firm, as past summer associates gave Bryan Cave one of the highest ratings in Lzine's 2003 Summer Associates Survey. Current associates point out that having a good personality gives candidates an additional edge in a sea of resumes and faces. The firm hires at the top law schools, recruiting on campus at 22 of them. For laterals, a top law school diploma doesn't hurt, but Bryan Cave is willing to look at exceptional candidates with credentials from regional schools.

Although some associates complain about the different pay scales for different offices, it appears that the firm balances salaries with the quality of life in each city. For its laid-back and flexible offices in Kansas City and Overland Park, first-years receive $80,000. But for a more tense and heavy workload office like New York, first-years get a much more generous $125,000. For attorneys that need to split their time between work and their personal obligations, Bryan Cave is one of the most understanding firms. The firm allows its associates to work part-time while maintaining their eligibility for partnership.
