World's Thinnest Phone

World's Thinnest Phone
Measuring a mere .27 inches thick, the X820 really couldn't get any smaller without compromising functionality. In addition to standard phone capabilities, it also has a 1.9-inch widescreen, horizontal display, Bluetooth technology, a 2-megapixel camera, a camcorder, a TV out, and an MP3 player.

The X820 also has 80MB of internal memory, making it possible to listen to MP3s and watch videos on the phone's display or on a television via the TV out. Users can listen to music using Bluetooth technology, as well.

You may be wondering how in the world Samsung managed to load such a small phone with so many multimedia goodies. The answer can be found in the company's Smart Surface Mounting Technology (SSMT). The technology compresses everything and makes it possible to fit loads of features into an ultra-thin outer shell.

Surpassing Motorola's RAZR as the thinnest phone on the market, the X820 is one of six new Samsung thin phones.

"Samsung's 2006 slim-phone lineup, the most advanced and diverse in the industry, showcases the company's manufacturing and design genius," said Kitae Lee, President of Samsung's Telecommunications Network Business, in a press release. "We continue to lead the wireless industry with premier technologies and eye-catching form factors."

Samsung first announced plans to produce a line of slim phones in June 2005. Daniel Chung, Vice President of Samsung's mobile communications marketing team, told reporters that month that the company had plans to reveal a super-thin phone in international markets during the fourth quarter of 2006; and so far, things are going exactly as planned.

"We used to be known for our thinness," he said. "We want to show our capability again."

At the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung revealed the A900, t809, d807, Z510, Z540, and P300. The first three were created for the North American market, and the last three for the European market. Each of the phones combines a super-slim design and plenty of multimedia capabilities.

The A900, which is the smallest Sprint Power Vision phone, is giving the RAZR some serious competition. With a 1.3-megapixel camera, camcorder, Bluetooth wireless technology, and pictBridge printing, some might say the A900 is basically a RAZR phone, but better. The A900 was also an integral part of getting Sprint Nextel's Power Vision EVDO network up and running in the U.S.; hence, it will be the first phone capable of downloading music over the air.

The t809, a slider phone, has a large color screen, 1.3-megapixel camera, camcorder, Bluetooth technology, MP3 player, 70MB of memory, and an extra memory card; and it can be purchased through T-Mobile.

The d807 has all of the standards, but kicks things up a notch with 512MB of memory, via a microSD memory slot.

The Z510 and Z540 are the slimmest you can get in a 3G phone, and both have 1.3-megapixel cameras, 4X digital zoom, steaming video capabilities, and video telephony and messaging. In addition, the Z540 includes 150MB of memory, and the Z510 has an MP3 player.

The P300, which has been dubbed "The Card" because of its credit card-esque thinness, is .35 inches thick. However, holding true to the old saying that big things come in small packages, the tiny phone boasts a 1.3-megapixel camera, music player, and the ability to record videos.

Samsung first broke into the slim-phone market with the SPH-N2001 in 2001, and now it hopes to take the market by storm with its new line.

"This robust slim phone portfolio is part of Samsung's aggressive global strategy in the slim phone category, demonstrating how quickly and effectively Samsung can recognize and act on consumer demands," a press release stated.

The company is broken down into five main divisions: Digital Appliance Business, Digital Media Business, LCD Business, Semiconductor Business, and Telecommunication Network Business. Employing approximately 128,000 employees in 57 different countries, Samsung is growing quickly. In addition to cellular phones, the company also makes digital TVs, memory chips, and TFT-LCDs.
