Scooter Style

Combining the very best CAD technology and Finite Element Method analysis, a revolutionary parallelogram suspension system, a three-disc braking system, and an electro-hydraulic locking system, among other comforts and conveniences, Piaggio's new scooter is leaving its competition in the dust.

Known in the personal transport world as the Piaggio MP3, the new and improved scooter has one rear wheel and two front wheels. With the added stability of the third wheel, the scooter displays extreme road grip; and even beginners can achieve 40-degree or greater lean angles on the scooter's two 12-inch front wheels.

Whether you're cruising on slick concrete or stone streets, the MP3 delivers safety like never before. Its three-wheel design makes it more stable than any scooter currently on the market and provides a smooth, easy ride.

When it comes to the open road, the MP3 performs extremely well. With a high assurance of safety, riders can really open the throttle and experience the scooter's speed.

In addition, the MP3's electro-hydraulic suspension-locking system makes it a cinch to park, completely doing away with the need for a stand. Because of the three-wheel design, all the rider has to do is press a button on the dash to deactivate the tilt mechanism and park. The electro-actuator then summons a hydraulic clamp that locks the bike into place without the stand.

Riders can also use the clamping system to lock the scooter into a standing position at stoplights so that they don't have to put their feet down. The clamping system automatically deactivates when the scooter is throttled. The MP3 can also be parked stand-less on a hill, but riders have to remember to set the parking brake.

And with a three-disc braking system, riders have to brake much less than with other scooters. In combining this braking system with the parallelogram suspension system, Piaggio created a scooter that requires 20 percent less braking on normal terrain and 24 percent less braking on slick surfaces compared to two-wheel scooters.

Because Vespas are known for looking extra hip, skeptics may be critical of how the third wheel factors into the mix; but they shouldn't be. The folks at Piaggio made sure to design the scooter in keeping with the sleek, stylish look Vespa fans have come to expect.

Even with the third wheel, the MP3 is very close in size to a GT scooter; and with a front-end width of just 16.5 inches, its proportions mirror those of a two-wheeler.

In addition to its sleek design, the scooter is also bursting with storage space. There is a storage compartment in the rear and under the seat, making it possible to store two full-face helmets, a backpack or other bag, and anything else less than three feet in length. There is even a light and seat cover located in the under-seat storage compartment. A remote control located on the ignition key opens both storage units.

The MP3's ergonomically correct seating makes for not only a safe ride, but a comfortable one. The padded seat and backrest is made for riders of all sizes, and the passenger is treated to plenty of space and rear hand grips.

The scooter's dashboard displays speed, fuel level, time, mileage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and more.

And because nothing is complete without the ability to customize, Piaggio has come up with plenty of accessories. From the Winter Pack (which makes it possible to ride the MP3 year-round) to the X-Jet Bluetooth Intercom helmet with built-in communication system (which lets you talk to your passenger or make hands-free cell calls), Piaggio has covered all the basics.

The Winter Pack comes with an extra-large windscreen treated with a special substance so that rain slides right off. There are even hand protectors, a heated leg cover, and a heated waistcoat to keep riders warm and toasty in the winter wind.

Also, the Winter Pack includes special thermal tires that enable riders to drive the MP3 on slippery roads in safety, and an anti-theft device with siren ensures the scooter is theft-protected at all times.

Overall, the MP3 promises to provide super style, sweet thrills, and a high level of safety all at once, making it the perfect choice for both trendsetting hipsters and hard-core thrill-seekers.

Although Piaggio hasn't released the official price of the scooter to the public, it has been rumored that the MP3 will cost somewhere around $6,400. The U.S. release date has also not been released, but the scooter will be available in the U.K. later this summer.
