05/23/06 Largest retail grocery chain announces promotion The Kroger Co., one of the largest retail grocery chains in the nation, has promoted Paul W. Heldman from Senior Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel to Executive Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel. Heldman has been working with the company since 1982, when he joined as staff attorney and moved on to become Assistant Secretary in 1987, Vice President and General Counsel in 1989, Secretary in 1992, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel in 1997. The Kroger Co. is based in Cincinnati, OH, and operates through more than 2,500 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states. Pevehouse appointed General Counsel by Fireman's Fund Fireman's Fund has named Cynthia Pevehouse the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary, effective immediately. Bringing a strong legal background in corporate governance, securities law, strategic transactions, and intellectual property, she will serve on the company's eight-person executive management team. She was previously General Counsel and Secretary at Polycom, Inc., in Pleasanton, CA, and joined Fireman's Fund in January 2006 as Vice President and Associate General Counsel. Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, a member of the Allianz Group, provides personal, commercial, and specialty insurance products nationwide. Kinross appoints Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Kinross Gold Corporation has announced the appointment of Geoffrey P. Gold as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. Gold will join Kinross from Placer Dome, where he has worked as Vice President, Assistant Secretary, and Associate General Counsel. He has more than 12 years' legal experience in the mining industry, with both international and domestic exposure. Kinross is the third-largest primary gold producer in North America. ComVentures welcomes its new Chief Counsel Rodi Guidero, former General Counsel at VantagePoint Venture Partners, enters the venture capital firm ComVentures as Chief Counsel. Guidero will look after the company's legal affairs and will execute its investments and investment liquidity. ComVentures is a $1.5-billion firm with investments in more than 100 companies. These companies have redefined the new era of communications, from Internet and mobile applications to the underlying infrastructures. Davis joins Temple-Inland after 40 years of law firm service Effective June 2006, Morris Davis will act as the new General Counsel of the NYSE-listed Temple-Inland, Inc. He will join from the Austin, TX, law firm of McGinnis, Lochridge & Kilgore, where he worked for nearly 40 years. In his new role, Davis will report to Chief Administrative Officer J. Bradley Johnston and will be responsible for managing and supervising the legal activities and resources of the company. Temple-Inland, Inc., works on four core operations: corrugated packaging, forest products, real estate, and financial services. New GC at Opteum J. Christopher Clifton has been named Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Compliance Officer at Opteum Incorporated, a real estate investment trust (REIT). Clifton possesses extensive experience in legal, financing, and accounting businesses. He comes from PPG Industries, Inc., where he was designated the primary attorney. In his new role, he will report to Chairman, President, and CEO Jeffrey J. Zimmer. Opteum Incorporated invests in residential mortgage-related securities and originates loans through its taxable REIT subsidiary, Opteum Financial Services. Jones moves from McGuireWoods to Markel Corporation D. Michael Jones, a former partner at McGuireWoods in Richmond, VA, has joined Markel Corporation as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. He had represented Markel Corporation in financing transactions and securities registrations while working at McGuireWoods. Bringing more than 25 years of legal experience, Jones will support the senior executive team in his new role. Markel Corporation is an international property and casualty insurance holding company headquartered in Richmond, VA. Exide promotes Hatcher Exide Technologies, a global provider of innovative electrical energy storage solutions, has promoted Barbara Hatcher from Deputy General Counsel to Executive Vice President and General Counsel. She previously served GNB Technologies, Inc., which was acquired by Exide in 2000.
