05/23/06 McCarter & English to merge with Gadsby Hannah McCarter & English has decided to merge with 67-lawyer Boston firm Gadsby Hannah, a deal that Brian Leary, a partner at Gadsby Hannah, said would be completed in early June. The firm will still be called McCarter & English and will comprise 430 lawyers in eight offices after the merger. M&E has offices in Newark, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Hartford, and Stamford. The firm specializes in life sciences and financial institutions. All Gadsby attorneys are expected to remain after the merger. Brogan is new managing partner at DLA Piper DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary has appointed litigator James Brogan as managing partner of its Philadelphia office. Succeeding William F. Kiniry, Jr., Brogan quit the firm in 1998 to join Pepper Hamilton, but returned in 2002. With an intention to introduce real estate, employment, and government-relations teams, Brogan will handle the office's strategic growth and management and will support the firm's pro bono initiatives. DLA Piper has a total of 54 lawyers in Philadelphia, with a particular emphasis on litigation, intellectual property, and corporate transactions. Pepper Hamilton forms alliance with The Abraham Group Pepper Hamilton and The Abraham Group have joined forces to form a strategic alliance committed to providing a comprehensive range of legal and business consulting services, focusing primarily on the energy sector. The announcement was made by the chairman and CEO of The Abraham Group, Spencer Abraham, and Pepper Hamilton executive partner Robert E. Heideck. The Abraham Group will provide free consulting to Pepper Hamilton clients on U.S. laws and regulations, foreign ownership, international markets, and energy-related environmental products. Luce Forward hires five trusts and estates attorneys Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps has gained five trusts and estates attorneys from the Rancho Santa Fe, CA, office of Holland & Knight. James M. Cowley, Steven J. Chidester, and Michelle B. Graham joined the firm as partners, while Kristina A. Hancock and Michael Folz Wexler joined as Senior Counsels. The new attorneys are practicing from Luce Forward's new Rancho Santa Fe office, as well as its Carmel Valley/Del Mar office. The Rancho Santa Fe office is one of nine offices Holland & Knight closed last November. Alston & Bird strengthens its bankruptcy practice Alston & Bird has appointed Martin G. Bunin and Craig E. Freeman as bankruptcy partners in its New York office. Both the partners come from Thelen, Reid & Priest, where Bunin was co-head of the bankruptcy group. Thelen Reid's bankruptcy practice is now solely headed by partner Daniel Lowenthal. Greenberg Traurig hires Of Counsel for Israel transactions Greenberg Traurig, an international law firm, is expanding its Israeli practice with the appointment of Mitchell Shelowitz as Of Counsel in its Corporate and Securities department. He will join the firm's New York office, with a focus on Israel-based companies and transactions. Previously an Israeli Business Team Leader at Nixon Peabody, Shelowitz is an international business lawyer with extensive experience in handling day-to-day business activities of small and large Israeli and U.S. companies. Jones Day augments its China practice Jones Day has strengthened its China practice with the addition of three partners. These additions are part of the firm's initiative to further expand its already-strong mergers and acquisitions and capital markets practices.
