"The SE-D1 is the ideal solution for people who want quick and easy access to their entertainment, offering a host of features and capabilities previously only available with higher-priced media managers or custom-installed systems," he said. "The SE-D1 literally makes storing, browsing, and enjoying your movies and music as easy as changing channels on your TV, with no more worries about scratched, lost, or damaged discs." Although the SE-D1 has the capacity to do fabulous things with your cherished CDs and DVDs, it can't do much on its own. In order to use it, you must have a television (or some other video-display device) and Sony's DVP-CX777ES 400-disc CD/DVD changer. The SE-D1 then hooks up to the disc changer so that users can manage their discs simply by clicking a button. When combined with Sony's DVD/CD changer, the SE-D1 both stores and manages discs while giving the owner easy access to them. It also gives users a variety of browsing options, allowing them to choose whether to view their movies and music by genre, title, or cover art. To get started, users simply have to load their discs into any of the SE-D1's slots, and the system does the rest. Integrating Internet abilities and home entertainment, the system is able to instantly identify the type of disc that has been inserted and consult online databases to gain information concerning the movie or CD. Then, Escient's MovieDB DVD database gives users their very own movie guide, displaying titles, cast information, cover art, and more for every DVD. In addition, every disc's cover art is automatically added to the system when the disc is loaded and appears on the full-color screen. The SE-D1's display includes an easy-to-use, intuitive television menu that allows users to browse movies, CDs, and Internet radio stations. The menu's background color is even customizable so that it looks great with any room's style; and when viewing the screen, owners can choose from a 4:3 or 16:9 (widescreen) display. The SE-D1 utilizes Escient's MovieDB technology to automatically identify DVDs, making selections appear almost instantly. This is a vast improvement on existing technology, which often leaves users frustrated at the amount of time it takes to locate and play discs. The SE-D1 also combines technology from Gracenote (a leader in global digital entertainment) and the All Music Guide (an online music database) to identify CDs and provide cover art. Also, music lovers who crave the ability to customize can create their own playlists and even add their favorite Internet radio stations. Free WMA and Shoutcast Internet radio stations are added periodically using the RadioDB Tuning Service, and the SE-D1 can also stream music from a FireBall Music Server. Further customizing abilities are available for those with children. The SE-D1 has parental controls that let parents determine which DVDs and CDs their kids can have access to. For added convenience, the system has a video switcher built into it so that it only uses one input to connect to the television or other display device. Also, because your disc collection probably exceeds the SE-D1's 400-disc capacity, the system's built-in video switcher makes it possible to expand easily from one to three changers. The system comes with a two-way control cable that enables the SE-D1 to control the Sony DVD/CD changer, meaning both systems can be controlled by one remote. In addition, the system can be controlled from any standard Web browser and includes a PDA interface for controlling it from a handheld Web device. The SE-D1 package also includes an IR remote, A/V cables, an Ethernet cable, a power cord, and a one-year warranty. Weighing approximately 20 pounds, the brushed-metal system is 17 3/8 inches wide, 4 5/8 inches tall, and 11 7/8 inches deep. Escient, which describes the SE-D1 as "powerful, reliable, and intuitive," is selling the system for $999. Escient is a part of D&M Holdings U.S., Inc.
